DSiWare Update for March 8th

No Comments 09 March 2010 |

Four new titles in the DSi shop today, two not even technically games. Not horrible, though, as we’re really glad to see the literacy quotient of young gamers supported with Flips, as well as watch Chillingo move into a whole new world of game publishing with Dracula.

Elemental Masters
Publisher:
lbxgames
Players: 1-2
ESRB Rating: T (Teen) – Animated Blood, Mild Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes
Price: 800 Nintendo DSi Points™
Description: In this fantasy card game, stand your ground in a quest filled with magic and adventure, and experience a thrilling combination of strategy and role-playing. Choose your character, build up your army in your card deck and fight the mystical creatures of Elendior. With thoughtful use of your cards, you’ll obtain the monsters of your enemy and support your attacks by using arcane spells and the rules of dark magic. Dive into this captivating story in the quest mode or duel with your friends in multiplayer mode. More than 100 creatures in numerous maps are waiting for you.
Evil Thoughts: Strategy Card Gamers will want to check this one out. Not sure if this will do anything new for the genre, but having it on the DSi will help.

4 TRAVELLERS™ – Play Spanish
Publisher:
AGENIUS Interactive
Players: 1-4
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 800 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Whether played alone or together with friends, 4 TRAVELLERS can teach you new words in Spanish. The game is suitable for both young and old, and no previous knowledge is necessary. The more you play, the more your Spanish vocabulary increases. You can also play and learn with the game’s unique learning mode. The game is perfect to bring on your trip, with more than 240 carefully selected words included specifically for this occasion.
Evil Thoughts: Seems like a pretty niche title, though that may bode well for the platform in general: if more apps exist for it, the audience grows.

Dracula – Undead Awakening
Publisher:
Chillingo
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: T (Teen) – Fantasy Violence
Price: 500 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Are you a vampire hunter? Are you ready to battle legions of undead foes including zombies, ghouls and werewolves? You’ll need to wield an arsenal of powerful weaponry while using your skill and intelligence. Uncover devastating firepower – machine guns, buzz-saws, flamethrowers and more – and choose upgrades for them as well as unique new perks for your character as your enemies increase in number and ferocity. You’re a tough customer, but beware – Lord Dracula is always on the hunt, and you are his prey. Enemies in Dracula have one thing in common: Undead, lycanthrope or mutant, they’re all after your flesh.
Evil Thoughts: Chillingo’s first foray into DSiWare is no doubt going to be a winner, as their iPhone entry was full of win.

Flips: The Bubonic Builders
Publisher:
Electronic Arts
Players: 1
ESRB Rating: Not Rated
Price: 500 Nintendo DSi Points
Description: Flips Interactive Books are the fun new way for kids to read. The builders are in to replace the girls’ toilet block, but they’re more interested in cups of tea and instant noodle snacks than doing any work. James suspects foul play, but Alexander and Lenny are doubtful until a strange accident hammers the truth home. How will the three friends stop St. Sebastian’s from being reduced to rubble?
Evil Thoughts: If nothing else, young gamers have another way to enjoy their DSi (or their parents’ device) without having to resort to “kiddie titles.” Bravo, EA, for bringing this series of books to the handheld gaming world.

Scribblenauts sequel called “groundbreaking”

1 Comment 08 March 2010 | Tags: , ,

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces plans to create the next Scribblenauts for Nintendo DS, a follow-up to the revolutionary hit videogame where players use their imagination to write any word, bring that object to life and use it to solve puzzles. Available in fall 2010, the follow-up game expands the innovative elements from the acclaimed first title with many inventive new features, including an adjectives system that allows players to push the limits of their imagination to create their own experience.

“The Scribblenauts sequel gives all players an enhanced game experience they will love and new challenges where they can use their imaginations even more,” said Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Development and Production, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “5TH Cell is a very talented and creative developer and we are excited to add to the Scribblenauts franchise with this new game.”

In this new game created and developed by 5TH Cell, players use the stylus and touch screen to help Maxwell, the game’s hero, acquire the “Starite,” the prize earned from solving the puzzle in even more robust challenges and redesigned levels. Players now have the ability to write any object that comes to mind and modify it in any way they desire using adjectives to reach the goal in each level. Adjectives can change the colour, size, elements, behaviours and many other aspects of the object they are describing. Multiple adjectives can be combined together to produce incredibly creative objects, allowing the player’s imagination to run wild for a truly unique and individualistic experience.

Localize This!

No Comments 05 March 2010 | Tags: , , , , , ,

Every time a game is announced by a Japanese developer there is always a bit of uncertainty as to whether the game will make it to the United States or Europe. Localization is not a cheap prospect and developers need to be sure that they will be able to recuperate the associated costs with bringing the game to a new territory. So here are a few games that I would love to see come to the United States and my thoughts on if it will actually happen.

Ninokuni- The Another World

What: For the unknowing, Ni No Kuni (The Another World) is the upcoming and highly anticipated Nintendo DS collaboration between Studio Ghibli and Level 5. Ni No Kuni was first announced in the pages of Japanese video game magazine Famitsu over two years ago and it has been on my radar ever since. The thought of a game that encapsulates the unparalleled story telling and whimsical nature of Studio Ghibli projects with the accomplished folks at Level 5 should be enough to get any gamer with a DS excited.

Chance: With the game still having a somewhat nebulous release date in Japan (It was pushed from late last year to an indeterminate Spring 2010 date), it could be over a year before US gamers are able to get their hands on the title. With Ni No Kuni being the first DS title to use the 512mb cartridge due to the sheer size of the cinematics and music used throughout the game, any potential publisher (Nintendo included) may have reservations about localizing a game that is going to be relatively expensive to manufacture with little promise of strong sales. ‘Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea,’ the first Studio Ghibli film to receive wide theatrical release in the United States, was a relative box office disappointment, illustrating that the Ghibli name won’t guarantee strong sales in the US like it will in Japan. Honestly I would be surprised if we didn’t get Ni No Kuni in the US, but it may be a bit of a wait, as I don’t see it being released anytime before 2011.

7th Dragon

What: Luminous Arc developer Imageepoch’s attempt at a more traditional RPG from Kazuya Niinou (Etrian Odyssey Series) and Reiko Kodama (Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia). The game presents itself as a mash up of Dragon Quest style exploration with a battle system similar to that of Etrian Odyssey.

Chance: The game was relatively well received and managed steady sales when it debuted in Japan a year ago, but 7th Dragon has yet to be announced for any other territories. With the DS becoming the defacto RPG system for Japanese development studios, it’s surprising that the title continues to be a Japan only release. Not all hope is lost as Imageepoch’s last title, Sands of Destruction, just came out after a 16 month delay from it’s Japanese release.

Zangeki no REGINLEIV

What: A Nintendo-published Mature title from Sandlot (Best known in America for it’s Earth Defense Force series). I think that first sentence says it all… A Mature title from Nintendo. With a game that also includes 4 player online Co-Op and Wii-Motion Plus support it seems like a no-brainer for Western release. Added to the above facts is that much like New Super Mario Brothers Wii, Zangeki comes in a kick-ass black Wii case.

Chance: Middling review scores and the desire to protect Nintendo’s brand image in America ultimately make a US release unlikely. With Nintendo putting a focus on Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii, as well as the lack of an announcement at their recent media summit, I am lead to believe that Nintendo has no reason to bring out a Mature rated title in a territory where the Wii still reigns supreme. I think that Zangeki represented a test (which failed) for Nintendo of Japan in an effort to reinvigorate Wii hardware and software sales in Japan.

Michigan

What: Michigan is a Survival Horror title from Grasshopper and Gouichi Suda that was released in 2004 on the Playstation 2.  Players take the control of a Cameraman that is sent to Michigan in hopes of solving some sort of mystery revolving around biological weapons. The gameplay all takes place as if viewed through a television camera and centers around documenting the anomalous happenings throughout the game.

Chance: In the US? Zero. In Europe? 100 Percent. Michigan was actually released in 2005 despite the fact that Suda had no idea until someone told him during an interview in 2008. The game wasn’t very well received in either territory, but I still have a strong desire to play it simply for the connection to Suda 51’s development history.

Sakura Taisen 5 – Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love

What: The fifth entry in the long running Sakura Taisen series finds players in an alternate version of 1920’s New York City as, much like every other Japanese role playing game, they try and stop an evil villain that is up to no good. Combat takes place in a traditional turn based role-playing style with the battles split between mechanized ground and air combat.

Chance: Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love is set for release later this month, coming to both the Wii and Playstation 2 on March 30th. Although this is a 5 year old game, I’m excited to finally see what makes the Japanese revere the Sakura Taisen series so much. Unfortunatly the Wii version only includes the English voice track, which based on the trailers, is not a good thing. Luckily the PS2 version includes a bonus disc with the full game voiced by the Japanese cast, making it the platform I’ll likely play it on. And Hey, it’s only 30/40 dollars on the Wii and PS2 respectively, so if you have any interest in picking it up you won’t have to break the bank to do so.

Old School Favorite Becomes New DSi Bestseller

No Comments 01 March 2010 | Tags: , ,

Gamelion and SkyZone Entertainment have announced that the DSiWare™ version of the hit mobile game, Extreme Hangman has sold more units, in just a matter of weeks, than any other game on the same storefront. The game is currently offered for sale on the Nintendo DSi™ Shop in North America for 200 Nintendo DSi ™ Points ($2.00).

The game’s title says it all: Extreme Hangman is based on the time-honored word-guessing game of hangman, but with a hilariously animated twist unlike anything you’ve seen before.

“I think the success is attributable to having the right title targeted at the proper demographic group of casual gamers,” said Key N. Sar, Chief Marketing Officer and Business Development, SkyZone Entertainment. “We couldn’t be more pleased with our first foray outside of the traditional mobile phone platform.”

“We and our partner, Skyzone, are very happy with the results thus far and will continue to collaborate jointly on more Nintendo DSiWare products in the coming years.” Said Sebastian Szczygiel, Vice President, Gamelion.

Extreme Hangman will be released in Europe and Australia during the 2nd Quarter of this year.
