Song of the Day: Down to the Street (from Mugen Souls)

Today’s Swords & Zippers column, coming up later, makes extensive reference to Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, but I’ve posted two songs from that game as Song of the Day entries recently, so I will resist doing it a third time for the sake of your sanity.

Instead, I present to you a track from a new acquisition that I haven’t had the chance to try yet — Mugen Souls from Compile Heart and NIS America, both of whom were heavily involved in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. For the uninitiated, Mugen Souls, which will undoubtedly find its way onto the pages of Swords & Zippers at some point in the not-too-distant future, is a game that casts players in the role of Chou-Chou, the somewhat-disputed Undisputable Ruler of the Universe. The ultimate aim of the game is to conquer the universe by uniting the seven worlds of which it is composed (a small universe, then) under Chou-Chous banner, and saving it from conflict in the process. The game incorporates some truly bizarre elements, including a “Moe Kill” option where you can literally sass someone to death.

Mugen Souls found itself getting heavily edited for its Western release due to the child-like appearance of some of its characters and the nature of some of the things they got up to. You want specifics? Specifically, some interactive bathtime scenes that featured, to quote a commenter on Siliconera who clearly has extensive knowledge of the subject, “naked loli girls in soapy bubbly foam moaning at your washing their body.”

Hmm. Yes. Perhaps for the best.
