It’s Swords & Zippers day here on Games are Evil, and that of course means that I’m picking a JRPG-related piece of music for today’s Song of the Day. The Ar Tonelico series actually represents something of a blind spot in my own knowledge of the JRPG genre, but I intend to rectify that pretty soon, largely as a result of being pointed in the direction of this soundtrack.
It’s probably no coincidence that lengthy RPGs have some of the best soundtracks in all of gaming. After all, you’ll be playing them for considerably longer than other single-player titles, so it stands to reason that you want to have a soundtrack that the player won’t be sick of after a couple of hours. Nowhere is this more important than in the game’s battle theme, as we’ve mentioned before; fortunately, Ar Tonelico II in particular is widely regarded to have, if you’ll pardon the vernacular, “nailed it” with regard to awesome ass-kicking themes that you’ll hear approximately three thousand times before you finish the game.
