Another Kickstarter campaign reached its funding goal successfully yesterday, and with several days to spare, too. LA Game Space is an ambitious project aiming to set up a “nonprofit center for video game art, design and research, where people of all backgrounds can discover the potential of games together.”
The Space, when it is completed, will support exhibitions, talks and workshops, artist residencies and research labs — effectively applying the “art gallery” model to video games which, given the growth of the “video games auteur” in recent years, sounds like a great idea.
The exhibitions will include interactive installations, performances and retrospectives, and all discussion will be shared online so even those who can’t attend in person will be able to be a part of it. Meanwhile, the speaker series will feature both “traditional and nontraditional game-makers,” while workshops will introduce newbies to various game-making concepts under the tutelage of experienced creators. All of these events will be livestreamed with worldwide, remote participation, and will be archived for free viewing online at a later date.
The artist residencies will provide game makers with work space, opportunities to exhibit their work and get feedback from peers and fellow developers — it’s a conscious attempt to free developers from the constraints inherent to commercial game development under the watchful eye of an overzealous publisher.
The Space’s game research labs, meanwhile, will record players’ responses including button presses, pulse rate, face-tracking and eye movement to help researchers study the physiological and psychological impact of games on various participants.
The movement was looking for $250,000 to get up and running and has already achieved this, but there are still three days left to run on the Kickstarter campaign. If you want to get involved, there are some great rewards on offer, including a new game from Keita “Katamari” Takahashi and Adam “Canabalt” Saltsman for everyone who pledges $5 or more.
