Sword of the Stars 2, it’s fair to say, had a somewhat troubled release, with the developer Kerberos memorably referring to it as “the perfect storm of cockup” and “a turnip.” That hasn’t stopped the team from working hard on fixing the problems it had, though. And, apparently, it hasn’t stopped them from making a spinoff game in a completely different genre.
Yes, Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a thing. More specifically, it’s a roguelike set in a mysterious alien facility where you delve into the titular “Pit” in an attempt to discover something that will help you cure the deadly plague ravaging your world.
The full game will feature three different character classes, 30 levels to explore, 30 different weapons, randomized augmentation effects, crafting and a whole bunch of other good stuff. The currently-available alpha version, which you can download from the official site, includes a fraction of the full game’s content. A beta version is expected to release later this month, and the full game will be available in the first quarter of next year.
The game is seeking additional funding via Indiegogo. The team is hoping to use the money to make the game as good as it can be in the short term, but in the longer term they hope to be able to fully support themselves as completely independent developers rather than being reliant on publishers. The campaign is currently only at $18,912 of its $60,000 goal with 41 hours left to go, but by adopting the “Flexible Funding” option on Indiegogo, the team will be able to make use of any money it does receive from backers, regardless of whether or not they actually make their target. Every little helps, as they say.
