Tales of Game’s [sic] have officially announced a piece of news that I don’t think anyone expected: Tales of Game’s presents Chef Boyardee’s Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden: Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa is getting a sequel, appropriately enough dubbed The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. Readers with good memories will note that this is indeed the same title the first game teased in its end credits, though the team now can’t remember exactly why they called it this.
News on the new game is fairly thin right now, but it’s due to arrive in the fourth quarter of next year. It will focus on the story of Charles Barkley’s son Hoopz Barkley, who appeared throughout Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden but was not one of the main player characters. Hoopz awakens in the year 666X after a B-Ball-induced coma brought about by the events seen at the conclusion of Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden. He finds himself held captive by the malevolent AI Cuchulainn, whose existence was teased at a number of points in the previous game. He has also lost his memory, so adopts the identity X114JAM9 and decides to seek out Cyberdwarf, one of the playable characters who accompanied Charles Barkley on his quest in the prior installment.
If all that sounds utterly batshit crazy, you’d be absolutely correct in that assumption, but that doesn’t stop the original Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden from being one of the best indie RPGs out there. If you’ve never experienced its nonsensical charms before, download it for free here.
