The embargo for Capcom’s Captivate 2012 conference just ended a few minutes ago, and the most significant pieces of news announced at the event are related to a game that was already announced: Resident Evil 6. A brand new trailer (which confirmed the inclusion of Sherry Birkin as a playable character, as well as the identity of the “unnamed mercenary” previously introduced in the announcement trailer released a few weeks ago – now confirmed to be Albert Wesker’s son) also revealed a new release date for the game: October 2, 2012. According to producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, the new release schedule was not decided in response to competing titles set for release in November, but rather was implemented due to the outpouring of positive response the game received upon its announcement back in February.
A team of over 600 people worldwide has been working on Resident Evil 6 for over two years, and the game is said to be one of the largest undertakings in the history of the series. Can Capcom once again find the perfect balance of action and horror that defined the pinnacle of the series in Resident Evil 4, or will this sequel continue to emphasize action and spectacle as in Resident Evil 5? It’s too early to tell, but based on impressions coming out of Captivate, the future looks promising.
