Release of the Week: Twisted Metal (PS3)

Sony prides themselves in the number of exclusive titles that have appeared on the PlayStation platform. From Ico to Uncharted, PlayStation has one of the strongest lines of exclusive titles in the industry. This week Sony’s longest running franchise will finally make its PlayStation 3 debut.  Twisted Metal has finally arrived with enough missiles and ice cream trucks to satisfy even the most lonely of valentines.

The original Twisted Metal game took the PlayStation by storm when it appeared over 15 years ago. The series quickly became the standard bearer for car combat games, especially when it came to playing with friends. In the PlayStation 2 era the series took a dark twist with Twisted Metal: Black. Despite a return to a lighter theme on the PSP, the PlayStaion 3 game will follow the dark tone set by Black.

Twisted Metal’s story will focus on four characters: Dollface, Mr. Grimm, The Preacher and the face of the franchise himself, Sweet Tooth. Each character will have their own playable storyline with three possible endings as they lead their faction attempting to win Calypso’s “Twisted Metal Tournament”. Throughout the tournament you will get to choose from an assortment of vehicles ranging from the two-wheeled Axel to an 18 wheeled semi truck to a former news helicopter. Each vehicle is armed to the teeth and will be used to compete in a variety objective-based battles.

A lot of attention lately has been focused on the announcement that director David Jaffe will be leaving developer Eat Sleep Play at the conclusion of Twisted Metal’s maintenance contract. While the developers have past Twisted Metal games have changed, Jaffe has been there for the majority of games in the series. This could spell trouble for the Twisted Metal franchise, so this may be your one shot to experience it this generation. Twisted Metal is a game you should at least take note of, it only for the series’ historical significance.
