Release of the Week: Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition (PS3)

This week is predominately dedicated to downloadable content. Several of last year’s biggest games are getting content updates. Rise of the Rakghouls is the first content update for the new MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. Gears of War 3 is getting its third major content update with the Fenix Rising Map Pack. Easily the most bizarre DLC will come to Saints Row: The Third in the form of Genkibowl VII as well as the ability to download CheapAssGamer.com’s CheapyD as a free follower. I won’t go into the details of what exactly the Genkibowl VII is, but if you’ve ever wanted to see a mascot be eaten by a shark, then you should probably look into it. It’s super ethical.

The week’s biggest release also involves a bunch of DLC. Gran Turismo 5, originally released in 2010, is getting a re-release that is crammed full of additional content. This $40 version of the game comes with all the new features from the 2.0 update as well as a voucher for over $20 worth of DLC. This doesn’t make up for the enormous time span between games, but its a great opportunity to jump in if you missed Gran Turismo 5 the first time.

Unfortunately if you haven’t jumped in by now, you probably won’t care. While Gran Turismo 5 appeals to hardcore driving simulations fans, your average gamer won’t get all that excited about driving around in circles. It won’t matter how many circles or vehicles to drive around them are included. There really won’t be anything new until the end of the month. If you are still looking for something to spend gift cards on, wait until then.
