Video games are capable of telling some exceptionally powerful stories. Just think back to some of the greatest gaming moments you have experienced and I’m willing to bet most of them surround a major turning point in the story. For example, anyone who played Final Fantasy VII remembers, in vivid detail mind you, the scene of Aeris and Sephiroth meeting. I bet just mentioning that brought back memories of the very first time you sat there in awe at what you just saw. Did you shed a tear there, or maybe you saved the game and walked away to let it all sink in as to what just happened.
Of course it is not always about the story and sometimes a well assembled trailer can trigger the water works. Epic Games made some emotion-stirring trailers for the Gears of War series, starting out with coupling the song Mad World with a video of Marcus struggling for his own survival in a world gamers would soon embrace. The two elements worked well at creating a completely solemn video, stirring plenty of feeling, and even jerking a few tears out.
