Weekly Poll: Are Achievements/Trophies a vital part of current game design?

So little Demon's Souls love

While I had expected a decent turnout for people beating Demon’s Souls, I was not prepared for the large number of people who did not buy the game. Maybe the thoughts of a game killing players over and over was too much to take, or this just flew under the radar for many. Either way, if you have a PS3, this title is definitely worth checking out!

When Achievements first came out on the 360, they were pretty gimmicky to say the least. Just playing through some games netted players 1000 points for their gamer scorecard. As time ticked by, however, these little icons of grand accomplishment became more difficult to obtain, and now maxing out a game may require hours upon hours of time investment. Trophies on the PS3 are no different.

With Achievements/Trophies being so popular, are these now a vital part of video game design? Have you ever felt let down when a game did not include some ancillary score/trophy for beating a difficult stage or performing some wild stunt? Go ahead and vote away, we always enjoy how you see the video game world!
