Uncharted is perhaps the single most important PlayStation 3 exclusive IP. Uncharted 2 won over 200 game of the year awards on the way to selling nearly 5 million copies worldwide. This week Naughty Dog hopes to do it again with Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. This time instead of a hulking brute of an enemy, Drake will have to outwit his most dangerous foe yet: an old British lady.
For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Uncharted 3 is a third-person action-adventure game that is half shooter and half platformer. Nathan Drake, a decedent of Sir Francis Drake, is an explorer/thief who specializes in finding ancient treasures. You can expect a cast of interesting characters engaging in colorful dialog across beautiful set pieces. All while gunning down bad guys and solving puzzles. Drake will drop a cheesy joke with a half smile and then gun down 20 men before letting another joke loose. Think of him as Indiana Jones backed up by good writing.
This time around Naughty Dog is making an effort to greatly improve Uncharted’s multiplayer options. Some of the set pieces that make the single player experience so compelling have made their way into online matches as well. Competitive multiplayer has a deeper leveling mechanic that will keep things interesting and will reward your play even if you lose a match. Maps will make better use of platforming mechanics then Uncharted 2′s maps. There are more cooperative options as well, including sections of the single player that you can play with a friend.
November is crowded with game of the year contenders, but the first offering may take the cake. Uncharted 3 will no doubt be a must own game for PlayStation 3 owners. The only issue might be when you get it. The single player experience will only last 8-10 hours which is a bit light compared to other games coming out this month. Even so, they might very well be the best 8-10 hours in gaming this year. Time to get your half-tuck on.
