This week’s biggest release isn’t the most interesting of games, but it is one of the most heavily advertised. EA and EA DICE are taking a second shot at dethroning Call of Duty as the premier military first-person shooter on the market. While they aren’t likely to overthrow Call of Duty, Battlefield 3 will most likely do better then last year’s Medal of Honor.
Despite falling behind the Call of Duty behemoth in terms of sales, the Battlefield series is no pushover. It has been extremely successful on the PC front and has made inroads on the console with its Bad Company spin-off series. The series is known for its large maps, high player count and vehicle combat. From tanks to fighter planes, Battlefield is the king of incorporating vehicle combat in first person shooters.
While Battlefield 3 will include a single-player campaign, the series has focused mainly on multiplayer. Players choose from 4 classes: Assault, Support, Engineer and Recon. As you play each class you will unlock more weapons and equipment as well as gain ranks. Game modes include Conquest, Rush, Squad Deathmatch, Squad Rush as well as your standard Team Death Match. It is different enough from Call of Duty to generate interest if you find that series growing stale.
Unlike most games on the market, Battlefield 3 was developed with the PC as the lead platform. This has some benefits, including much better visuals for those with a PC that can handle it as well as a 64 player maximum, as opposed to the 32 max on the consoles. EA has made some experimental decisions regarding the platform as well. Battlefield 3 will be an Origin exclusive digitally. Origin will launch a web browser from which you will join a game.
Battlefield 3 won’t be a serious threat to Modern Warfare 3 this year. Its purpose is mostly to provide a home for the hipsters of the FPS genre. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but you can expect a player drop-off once Modern Warfare 3 launches. Make sure to jump in while Battlefield 3 is still cool. You know, last month during the Beta.
