I had a great opportunity this past weekend to meet up with Blake and Ross for the first time. Now back in the day this occasion would consist of chatting, gaming, beer drinking, and possibly even looking one another in the eye while we gabbed about nothing life changing. That was a time long before smart phones, iPods, iPads, and laptops invaded out lives. What actually happened was slightly different. We did chat and there was plenty of beer consumption, but we would stop our chatting to check our electronic tether devices. Ross was glued to an iPad and iPod, Blake would jump on the iPad from time to time, and I was just as guilty as I tweeted and checked my hero in Godville. Don’t get me wrong, I had a great time but how would this scene change had we disconnected from out devices for just a few hours?
This scenario is not unique to this past weekend, however, as I see it all the time. I go to a restaurant and kids are playing on a DSi, parents are checking email, and there I am checking Twitter and posting photos to Instagram. Mobile technology is now in every aspect of our lives. Hell, there are even apps, like Foursquare, that urge you to check-in wherever you are, rate businesses, and so on, only further keeping us tethered to the internet.
So I’m curious, how has mobile technology interfered with your life? Do you pull out your iPod to check Facebook while sitting at the dinner table, or do you play mobile games while having conversations with friends? Nobody is saying this is good or bad, but a constant online connection coupled with ever smaller and smarter devices is drastically changing how we interact with one another.
