Release of the Week: Warhammer 40K: Space Marine (360, PS3, PC)

Labor Day weekend is here, and so are the games! This is one of the craziest weeks of the fall in terms of major releases. Driver: San Fransisco, Dead Island, Resistance 3, Disgaea 4, Star Fox 64 3D, BloodRayne: Betrayal, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 all get released this week. That’s enough gaming to last you for months! No matter what your interest, there is a game for you this week. That is, unless your interest is in the PSP.

With so many great titles in one week, it is difficult to pick one stand out title. It had to be done however, and this week the game I’m most interested in is Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. Don’t let the somewhat bland title deceive you, Space Marine looks like it will be one hell of a fun game. Based on the Warhammer 40k table top game, Space Marine exists in the same universe as Relic’s hit RTS series, Dawn of War. Far from a strategy game, this game gets up close and personal with the brutal combat a space marine super soldier must engage in when battling the enemies of the emperor.

Space Marine is a third-person action game that relies more on ripping enemies in half with a chainsword than hiding behind cover and shooting your foes. While most third-person games require you to hide behind cover to regain health, Space Marine encourages you to charge forward and perform special fury attacks to regain life. Watching Captain Titus disemboweling Orks is quite a bit more satisfying than hiding behind a chest-high wall.

The Space Marine multipayer has some pretty interesting features. Competitive multiplayer has a standard team death match mode as well as an objective based mode where you must capture and defend various locations. One side will be made up of space marines while the other will be the traitorous chaos space marines. Each side has three classes, one of which will be balanced while the other two will focus either on ranged or close combat.

In addition to choosing your perks and weapons, your marines armor will be fully customizable. Each piece of armor can be swapped out or recolored. Either that, or you can choose a preset color scheme from among the many notable space marine chapters in the Warhammer 40K universe. You can chainsaw your friends and look good doing it. What more could you ask?

Coming later in October will be free Co-Op DLC, letting you cut down hordes of aliens with up to three of your friends. Sure, the game may be old hat by then and the player base might have moved on, but if Space Marine is launching in this crowded week then THQ must be confident in how well it is going to preform.
