DeadRising-fan-favorite Frank West is back, and this time he’s taking on Fortune City in DeadRising 2: Off the Record. When this game was first announced, a lot of fans of the series didn’t really know what to think. Why is there a full disc release of what basically amounts to a “Frank Mode” version of DeadRising 2? Well, after some hands-on time with the game, it became clear just how much has changed since my last romp through Fortune City.
Many players already know about the new amusement park area called “Uranus Zone.” I got a chance to explore this new area on the PAX show floor, and it is packed to the brim with all varieties of new items and weapons to experiment with (note: try combining an alien mask with a bag of gems for some truly hilarious results). There is a midway area, several rides, restaurants, VIP clubs, and – of course – clothing shops to play around in. The new zone has an interesting look and I can’t wait to see the full set of content that Capcom is crafting for that zone. In other areas of Fortune City, the location of certain items has changed compared to the original game, presumably to make room for many of the new item combinations available to Frank in the game’s large open world.
An entirely new story was crafted for the game, with Frank coming to Fortune City as a washed-up journalist competing on Terror Is Reality in order to pay the bills. Needless to say he gets caught up in some trouble after the competition concludes, and Frank needs to figure out a way to escape the zombie-ridden complex before time runs out. Not many details have been released on the new story, but suffice it to say that Capcom plans on making DeadRising 2: Off the Record a unique experience for fans of the original game.
The game plays very similarly to the original with a couple important differences; first, unlike Chuck, Frank has access to his trusty camera that he can use to gain large amounts of PP by taking specific types of photographs of survivors, zombies, and psychopaths. Co-op mode has been enhanced as well, with one player taking control of Frank and the other controlling Chuck. Finally, an infinite mode known as “Sandbox Mode” has also been added to the game. Sandbox Mode will allow players to explore Fortune City at their leisure, whether they wish to rack up kills against zombies, set up quirky situations for achievements or photographic opportunities, or simply goof around – the options are endless, and fortunately, so is the time limit.
See our interview with the Executive Producer of the game, Jason Leigh, for his thoughts on the upcoming release of DeadRising 2: Off the Record, which is scheduled to launch later this year.
