As you may remember, I absolutely love my Nook. As you also may remember, I had struggled to resist the NookColor, and I am proud to say that I have successfully not bought the NookColor. However, when the new Nook appeared in Barnes & Noble’s inventory right before E3, I knew resistance was futile.
The new Nook is all touch-screen, with a power button, a home button at the bottom, and page-turning buttons on the sides. But why would you use the page-turning buttons when you can just swipe your finger across the screen, much like how you would turn a page of an actual book? It’s very similar to the functions of reading ebooks on an iPad or an iPhone, but this e-reader has the eInk tech of the original Nook and the Amazon Kindle, so you can take this puppy outside and read with the glaring sun. And considering it’s only $139, you aren’t going to be that freaked out if you drop it, unlike how you would feel if you dropped your $499 iPad.
Two things attracted me to the Nook: the giant touch-screen and its size. Everybody loves touch-screens, but if you had the original Nook as I did, you know that its touch-screen was less than perfect. Whenever you needed the keyboard to type in notes or search for something, you had an itty-bitty keyboard to work with. I think Palm Pilots had bigger keys. Suffice to say, typing on it was a beating unless you had long nails–something I doubt many men have. Since this Nook sports a touch-screen across its entire surface, the keyboard is actually large enough for your fingers! This has made searching for books, adding Nook contacts, searching for a particular passage, etc. far easier to use. Not to mention, the fact that you can highlight words with your fingers makes annotations and word look-ups a ton easier as well.
As you can see from my photo, the Nook is incredibly thin. It’s so small, I was able to pack it in my travel purse while I was in Japan. Whenever I was on a train, which was a lot, I was able to easily take out my Nook, read, and then slip it back in my bag when we reached a stop. It was so light, it didn’t weigh down my purse at all either; that makes all the difference when you’re doing a fair bit of walking each day.
I have to say that this is one of the few impulse buys I’ve ever had with zero buyer’s remorse. I wish I could say the same thing about my 3DS.
Most importantly, look how great the Mass Effect novels look on my Nook.
