As game developers and publishers strive to find new ways to make money off video games and to keep their creations off the used-games shelf, some are finding great ways to do this while others aren’t tapping into their creativity quite as much.
Microsoft announced in a press release today the Forza Motorsport 4 Season Pass. The pass, priced at $30, isn’t the usual license to play the game online and push consumers to buy it new. The Season Pass, in fact, won’t mean much come April. According to the release, the season pass gives access to six DLC bundles that will be released from November through April, each bundle containing 10 new cars. Those with the season pass will save 30% over the standard retail price. Better yet, those with the pass will get a bonus pack of 10 cars on release day for a total of 70 additional cars. And let’s not forget the pack of 5 cars available to those who pre-order the season pass.
Instead of trying to push gamers into a day-one purchase just to play online, Microsoft is letting enthusiasts get a discount on DLC they’d almost certainly buy. If you’re a Forza fan or you know one, you know that’s true. We love our car packs. This is the right way to do DLC. The complications that come with licensing car rights make bonus packs like this somewhat of a necessity, I think, but this is a good way to pull fans in.
