Community Question: What was the hardest game you have ever completed?

Ross in his natural state.

I recently picked up R-Type on Android for a review, and it started getting me thinking about all the frustratingly hard games I have played throughout the years. For those that have never played R-Type, it is considered by many as one of the hardest shoot-em-up games to ever piss gamers off. It took pattern recognition, memorization, and some quick whits to beat this game.

But there have been plenty of games to come out since then, and some have genuinely challenged players to the very end. The most recent example that comes to mind is Demon’s Souls. This title let players know throughout several trailers that we’re going to die…a lot! I loved this game as it was extremely challenging, but it never felt unfair. When I died, it was because I dove the wrong way or made a miscalculation on remaining life versus damage output, and not because someone decided I needed to fight eight end bosses with no checkpoint or battle wave after wave of enemies with no health potion.

Even fighting games can be included in this question. Take Street Fighter IV and that bastard Seth at the end. Capcom decided it was necessary to bump his difficulty up two levels and allow him to be a cheap cheating prick. Yes, I have thrown my controller because I almost had him down in the second round and he pulled some tricks out of his ass and beat me to a pulp. See, hard ass game.

The world of video games is chock full of difficult games, and we want to know what one was the most challenging to play from start to finish. Crappy games don’t count, but those that forced you to draw strength from deep within your gamer soul is what we want to hear about. So lay it on us, what is the hardest game you have ever played?
