Release of the Week: Madden 12 (360, PS3, PC, Wii, PS2, PSP)

Football season is right around the corner. Its the time for Fantasy Football drafts, speculation on Brett Favre’s return and another edition of Madden. Yes, the long running football franchise is back once again, even if the season itself was in question. Unfortunately it looks like most of the innovations are existing outside of the game itself.

There aren’t any new game modes making it into this year’s Madden. The preseason got a little revamp, changing how you cut players as the season approaches, as well as some adjustments in contract negotiations and free agency. The in-game experience received tweaks in the form of tackling, but not much other then that. If you picked up last year’s game, there isn’t much here other than a roster update.

What is new this year is the EA Season ticket. If you choose to pay the $25 fee, you will get some added benefits for all 5 EA Sports games this year. These benefits include downloading the games a few days before their release, getting 20% off all DLC and some premium web content. If you plan on picking up Madden, NHL, FIFA, NCAA and Tiger Woods, this might not be such a bad deal, especially if you download a game early and decide not to buy it after all. Otherwise will need to spend a whole lot on DLC for it to be worth it.

If you haven’t played Madden in a few years, this is probably the one to get, otherwise it will probably be safe to skip it this year. With the PlayStation Vita and Wii U on the horizon, hopefully some pretty exciting things could be coming to the franchise in the future. Hopefully the additional fees for those features won’t be too high.
