PAX Hands-On: Sonic Generations

Not much has changed since our hands-on with the game back at E3, but SEGA did have a few surprises in store for its Sonic Generations showing here at PAX.

For those unfamiliar with the game, here’s a brief summary. The player takes control of both “retro” Sonic and “modern” Sonic and traverses a wide variety of both “retro” (2.5D) and “modern” (3D) levels filled with the usual array of loops, rings, speed boosters, and awkwardly placed robotic enemies. The difference between this game and many of the other Sonic console games released in the last few years is that Sonic Generations actually “feels” right. Fans of the series will know what I’m talking about, but suffice it to say that all of the levels showcased in public so far have been designed to minimize too many cheap deaths, and both Sonics are able to easily reach a satisfying level of speed. One of the more recent complaints, floaty jumping, has also been tightened up. If anything, the jumping mechanic feels much closer to the 2D titles than Sonic 4: Episode 1.

The level showcased at PAX, City Escape, will immediately bring back memories as a faithful homage to the first level of Sonic Adventure 2 – right down to the use of skateboards and the presence of a remixed version of the annoying-yet-unforgettable “Follow Me” vocal track from the classic Dreamcast game. The gigantic GUN truck also makes a return appearance, chasing both “retro” and “modern” Sonics through the city while managing to cause a great deal of destruction in the process.

Sonic Generations is shaping up quite well. Find out if the Sonic Cycle will finally be broken when the game launches later this fall.
