It’s the middle of July, which means the days are long and the sun is hot. It also means that all the AAA games are having the finishing touches put on as they prepare for a jam packed holiday season. That used to mean a slow release schedule and time for gamers to catch up with their stack of shame. Who really wants to do that, though? Old game is old, amirite?
Thankfully Microsoft is a company that likes to make money even while the sun is out. This is the first week of the fourth annual Summer of Arcade on Xbox LIVE Arcade. Kicking things off is Supergiant Games with their much anticipated Action RPG. Bastion is set in a world that has suffered a catastrophic event called the Calamity. Much of the world was torn to pieces and taken over by hordes of hostile monsters. Unlike other post-apocalyptic games, Bastion’s world is still bright and colorful despite the destruction. It will be easier for you to patch the world back together without everything being “wasteland brown.”
The hero of Bastion is a silent protagonist who woke up after the Calamity that tore the world apart. Luckily he soon finds an old man who will help fill the conversation void. While the hero, referred to only as “The Kid”, runs around killing monsters, the old man takes the time to narrate his actions. There are some 3000 lines of recorded narration to carry you through this 8-10 hour game.
Overall Bastion looks like a solid Indy title to kick off the Summer of Arcade. Those without a 360 will get the chance to pick it up on the PC later this year, but why wait until the market is flooded? Unless, of course, you’re still recovering from the Summer Steam Sale. Well, back to the street corner for me…
