This installment of Malloosings is just about my love of comics and City of Heroes (CoH) in general. NC Soft has recently announced that CoH will be going free to play in the upcoming City of Heroes: Freedom. This is certain to get them a lot of attention and probably some new blood into the game. As a long time player, I look forward to seeing the new model at work when it hits in July. If the free players are annoying to the point I cannot take it, I will switch to the server which is pay-to-play only.
This move reminds me of a move DC Comics will be doing in September, which I am not as happy about. DC Comics has decided to relaunch all of their titles in September with new #1 issues, which will also be day and date with digital distribution. I see what DC is trying to do, but I just am tired of reboots, retcons, and relaunches for sales. I hope it works for DC, but for the most part I will not be at the party because of fear and frustration. Frustration that all my years of collecting may be made moot. Fear that it will fail and DC will look silly. I really do like their product, after all.
Now to paraphrase an old ad campaign, You got your CoH in my DC! No you got your DC in my CoH!
