Sony Press Conference: Recap

The Games Are Evil crew was once again out in force at the Sony Press Conference at E3 in LA yesterday evening – here are some of their thoughts on Sony’s big night:

  • And we’re off. Sony Press conference begins with a PS3 Trailer. #GrE3
  • #GrE3#Sony Green Lantern, Nathan Drake, Lightning McQueen. Then NGP, then Move. Now Captain America, more hardware porn.
  • #GrE3#Sony CinemaNow coming to PS3 later this year. Tretton keeps gesturing with his hands. He has two hand gestures.
  • #GrE3#Sony Uncharted 3 trailer started with no sound. Someone was pissed.
  • Uncharted multiplayer beta begins in July. #GrE3#Sony Also? Get the new multiplayer game at Subway. #wtf?
  • #GrE3#Sony Resistance 3 on demo now. Presenter is not very comfortable with large crowds, we think.
  • Lots of Sequels in this presentation, #Sony#GrE3
  • #GrE3#Sony Offering Playstation 3D active glasses into a 3D monitor bundle HDMI cable, and a 3D game. All for $500. Glasses alone are $70
  • Raise your hand if you actually own, and play, with a PS Move
  • Infamous 2 – Bigger, Badder, More of the same? #GrE3#Sony
  • #GrE3#Sony Jack Tretton gets lots of emails about a 2002 game [Sly]. It’s family friendly hardcore, apparently.
  • #GrE3#Sony Holy crap – Eve Online on PS3? No wai! Dust is PS3 Exclusive extension to Eve Online. Also? NGP. #superyay
  • #GrE3#Sony Bioshock on the NGP. Sweet.
  • #GrE3#Sony Paramount and Sony put out a Star Trek game with a Phaser shaped peripheral for Move support.
  • Blah, blah, blah…can we please get to the NGP?
  • #GrE3#Sony Kaz is hyping the #NGP – Now officially Named PlayStation Vita. “Vita means life”
  • Lots of booing for that AT&T partner announcement
  • RT @crunchychocobo: It’s like the 3DS all over again. I come disinterested, and leave wanting it NOW. #GrE3
  • Stardust HD on PSVita. We will game test this for you Sony!
  • PSVita dropping holiday 2011. $250=WiFi $300=3G. Damn solid pricing.
  • Does Nintendo have a solid competitor in the handheld market…FINALLY?
  • Sony Presser over. They did a great job and made some bold promises. Let’s hope they deliver.

Eric Wall:

Conference High: It starts and ends with the Vita price point. 249.99 hits Nintendo hard (even if they announce a price drop at their press conference), and also provides a compelling reason for users who felt scorned by the PSP to pick it up. Sony brought games, and a whole lot of them – good on them. Oh, and the few second teaser for a Vanillaware looking game on Vita; You just sold me a handheld Sony.

Conference Low: Uncharted is great, but probably shouldn’t have been the linchpin of the Sony press conference. Everyone know UC3, and Uncharted for Vita is coming, making the presentations interesting but a tad long at certain points. A few more bombshells would have been appreciated, but overall I came out relatively pleased with Sony’s offerings.

Rob LeFebvre:

Conference High: Not only the Vita price point, but that cool new 3D HD Monitor with the slick split screen solution – two pairs of 3D glasses, two separate views of the action. THAT’s using 3D gimmickry for good, Sony. Also? Bioshock Infinite and Bioshock PSVita, as well as Uncharted on PSVita. Oh, and holy crap – EVE Online game? Sweet.

Conference Low: Uncharted loss of sound in the demo was bad enough, but what the hell is up with the over saturation of crappy Move titles and useless 3D gaming support?

Lucas DeWoody:

Conference Highs: Easily the price point for the NGP/Vita. All that tech while matching the 3DS dollar to dollar. Sony made the most of their time showing actual games and making you want them. The PlayStation branded display was also a surprise. Using 3D tech to display two images off of one screen for advanced split-screen gaming is a bold idea that needs to catch on.

Conference Lows: AT&T as Sony’s partner for 3G on Vita. When will gaming and cell phone manufacturers wake up and realize that the world fuckinghates AT&T? Hopefully the unanimous ”boos” from the crowd give them a hint. It also did run a little long, as most Sony events do. AV glitches were abound as well. There were also a ton of sequels and not a lot of original content on display.
