Release of the Week: Trenched (XBLA)

Normally June means a slow down in game releases. People are going outside and taking vacations, so game sales tend to drop as consumers leave the couch behind. It is unusual, then, for so many games to be released this week.  For example, F.3.A.R. is a messed up psychological thriller that might interest some FPS fans. Those who like hacking and slashing hordes of enemies with a co-op partner will surely enjoy Dungeon Siege III. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D might interest those who missed the legendary classic the first time around.

While each of these games are worth playing, this week’s release of the week is Double Fine’s latest work, which is being released exclusively on XBLA. Trenched is a tower defense and mech combat game from the creators of Costume Quest, Stacking and the upcoming Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster Kinect game. Double Fine certainly has range. Set after World War I, a radio broadcast has warped the minds of some soldiers and left them super smart. One soldier builds some mechanical legs to help wounded soldiers while another invents Television a little early.

Television, as we all know, is an evil brain controlling device. This means those those mechanical legs had to get converted into steam punk mechs to defend against the evils of mass media. In other words, Trenched retains that sense of humor that Double Fine is known for. You will be controlling a mech from a third person point of view as you defend buildings against an onslaught of mechanical foes. Collecting scraps from fallen enemies will allow you to build towers to help in your defense. You will be able to upgrade your mech in order to increase its building or combat abilities, while also getting some vanity items, such as new threads for your pilot.

This most manly of games is worth paying attention to. How often do you get a chance to play a third person, mech combat, tower defense game, with a sense of humor? Make sure to bring some friends, because Trenched features four player co-op. Battle against the evils of Monovision this week on XBLA.
