The end of June is here and the video game drought has finally arrived. Vacation season means fewer major releases for home consoles. There is a small exception in the portable market. After all, people need something to play on long car rides? This is the perfect time to release a long awaited core title on the new Nintendo 3DS.
Unfortunately, calling Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D a “core” title might be overstating things a bit. Mercenaries is a collection of the “Mercenaries” mini games seen in Resident Evil 4 and 5. There will be several playable characters, game modes and maps for some zombie killing multiplayer fun, but the only story you’ll find is the demo packed in for the upcoming Resident Evil Revelations.
If that’s what you’re into, then there is fun to be had here. As you play you will unlock new skills, equipment and costumes for optimal zombie killing fun. The game also features revamped controls from the console games, including the ability to move AND shoot… at the same time! Crazy, I know.
There is one small bit of information you should know before you run out on Tuesday to pick up Mercenaries. In an effort to combat used game sales, you will be unable to reset your saved games. That is, once you’ve unlocked everything… that’s it. No “prestige” mode here to do it all again. Keep that in mind if you want to pass the game to someone else or if you are thinking of picking up the game used.
