Heroes of Ruin is Square Enix’s upcoming title for the Nintendo 3DS (sorry that it’s not Kingdom Hearts 3DS). It’s an action-adventure game that takes advantage of the 3DS’s co-op capabilities, and it’s so seamless that players can drop in and drop out of a game at the drop of a hat. The game is in its pre-alpha stage, so what we saw was fairly limiting. However, what we saw was not all that intriguing. In fact, if the game had no co-op options, there would be nothing really remarkable about it.
It’s your standard hack-and-slash action-adventure/RPG. You slice and dice your way through enemies with the typical normal attack and strong attacks, level up, and learn new attacks and abilities along the way. With the co-op, it’s the same game but with a friend.
They weren’t really able to give us much in terms of the story, and unfortunately, my partner and I kept desynching with one another due to the high volume of wireless signals bouncing around the convention center. The game isn’t slated to release until the spring of 2012, so that is plenty of time to work out the kinks and hopefully give us something more than the current gameplay. As it is, it’s just another hack-and-slash game, but it’s rendered in 3D.
