If you have ever wanted to shape your own hero in the X-Men universe, this is your opportunity. Coming this fall, X-Men Destiny is set after the death of Professor Xavier and will allow you to shape a new mutant as they come to terms with their new found power. There are three brand new mutants to choose from and players will be able to develop their character by picking their core power types and who they eventually team up with.
Our demo focused on Aimi Yoshida, the lone female of the group. Aimi was initially given Energy as her core power, throwing bright yellow beams of energy at some thugs that were out to get her. In addition to core powers, your mutant can equip various X-genes to enhance their abilities. Based on the powers of various franchise characters, X-genes will augment your powers and give you their abilities. You will be able to equip offensive, defensive and utility X-genes. If all of your equipped X-genes are from the same mutant, then you will gain further powers related to them.
You will get to meet several franchise characters throughout the game. These include favorites such as Gambit and Wolverine, as well as lesser known characters such as Northstar, who will be making his first video game appearance. The mutants are divided into two factions: The X-men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. Each faction has a different way of dealing with those who threaten mutant kind.
The choices you make will affect which faction you side with, but which powers you gain as well. These important choices are made at various “destiny moments” throughout the game. The example demonstrated in our demo came after a boss fight with a scientist who injected way too many X-genes at once. Afterwords we had a choice to either give the scientist’s dangerous new weapon to the Brotherhood of Mutants, or destroy it as the X-men instructed. We figured we might as well use the weapon against our enemies and sided with the Brotherhood.
X-Men Destiny will be available this Fall on the XBox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Nintendo DS.
