Release of the Week: MotorStorm: Apocalypse (PS3)

Word on the street is that Sony will have the PlayStation Network back up and running this week. Good news, as a big PlayStation exclusive is racing into stores this week after an unexpected delay. MotorStorm: Apocalypse was originally slated for April but it was delayed after the Tsunami hit Japan due to the game’s subject matter. Something about buildings falling down on you as you race through disaster areas might have triggered some unintended emotions. Of course, you will be playing this game just days after the PSN apocalypse, so perhaps the game is just aptly named.

Like in previous MotorStorm games, you will be racing in everything from dirt bikes to monster trucks. All told there are thirteen classes of vehicles to choose from. Smaller vehicles are more nimble and can fit into tighter spots. Big cars can run over smaller cars and take more punishment. What’s new to the series is that you are going to try to win a race and also avoid tornadoes. Because winning is all that matters. The disastrous events in each of the 40 races are dynamic, favoring quick reflexes over muscle memory.

That means that MotorStorm: Apocalypse will truly shine online. Up to 16 racers can duke it out online, but if PSN isn’t back up then four can race together locally. The more you race, the more “chips” you earn which increase your driver level and can be used to unlock perks. Up to three perks can be equipped during each race. You can also wager the chips you will earn on who you think will be the eventual winner. This makes races more interesting as you try to help the person you bet on rather then trying to win yourself.

It is going to take a lot for Sony to regain the momentum it lost due to the PSN hack. Great multiplayer centric exclusives like MotorStorm: Apocalypse will help, although we will have to see if they can establish a player base. If not, MotorStorm: Apocalypse supports 3D and may be one of the best games to utilize the technology. If you enjoy watching shrapnel flying towards your face in 3D, then this game is for you!
