Release of the Week: Hunted: The Demon’s Forge (360, PC, PS3)

Releasing a game the week before E3 is a bit risky. The attention of the games industry is focused completely on what will be coming this fall, not on the few games staggering out after the Spring push. Then again, big name games like inFamous 2, Duke Nukem Forever, and Dungeon Siege III are still to come in June. This year just has too many games to stick to conventional wisdom.

InXile is hoping that its dark fantasy action game will find success in the week before E3. Hunted: The Demon’s Forge is focused primarily on cooperative play.  You will be controlling one of the two main characters, each having a completely different skill set. Caddoc is the large, sword-wielding type that gets in up close and personal with enemies. E’lara is an elven huntress, which means she is good with a bow and can’t be bothered to put on enough clothing to defend herself from a butter knife.

Players will need to work together to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.  For example, E’lara can shoot frost arrows that freeze enemies, making it easy for Caddoc to move in and smash them. Caddoc is great for mashing buttons up close whereas E’lara will be more comfortable to those who play cover based shooters. In single-player mode you will be able to switch which character you are using, just in case your AI partner isn’t doing exactly what you want them to do.

In addition to the story mode, Hunted: The Demon’s Forge has a dungeon building mode called the “Crucible” mode. You will be able to build your own dungeons and share them with others online. For those who love dungeon crawling with friends, this could be the game you’ve been waiting for. This is also one of the few games playable in split-screen, for those with partners a bit closer to home. While it is doubtful that Hunted: The Demon’s Forge will do anything ground breaking, it could satisfy that co-op itch and get you through the summer.
