A Second Opinion: Mortal Kombat (PS3)

Mortal Kombat has surely been through many drab releases over the past few years. The latest release turns the tide on these hohum games and takes the fighter back to its dark, violent, and extremely fun roots. The game includes a bounty of things to do starting with a surprisingly lengthy story mode, a challenge tower that includes 300 various challenges to complete, plenty of mini-games, and a krypt full of unlockables. Those of you worried that the fighting takes a step back to make room for all this will be happy to know that battles are hard won, juggle intensive, combo chaining affairs; the button mashing will only get you so far this time around. Heck, even the visuals are top notch with X-Ray moves making you cringe and small details planted in every stage. Let’s not forget the solid bone crunching, cringe worthy audio that accompanies this game. It is like NetherRealm read my mind on what I loved about this series from so long ago.

The only complaints I can muster for this are that the difficulty curve in the story mode gets extremely cheap sometimes, with Shao Kahn taking the cake with his utterly cheap ass moves and fighting techniques. Another kink in the arsenal of badassery is in the audio to visual synchronization of the X-Ray moves. However, these flaws are minor when compared to how great the rest of the game is. If you are like me, and you have been feigning for a proper fighter to carry the MK badge, your game has arrived and awaiting your instant buy.
