Last week we had a poll asking what people thought was the most import aspect of game design. Nearly every area received a vote, except one. For some reason, audio was not that important. So to bring some retribution to this aspect of videogames, I am seeking what you, the community, feels is the game with the best audio.
Now keep in mind, a game soundtrack is more than the beautiful orchestral scores that grace your ear drums. There is a lot of work that goes into creating every bone break, glass shatter, car crunch, and toppling building. The sound effects work in conjunction with the music to create an environment that compliments, and sometimes boosts, the visuals. If you think audio is not important, just turn the speakers down and play for an hour.
Let me help get you rolling with an example. The game with the best audio, for me, is Donkey Kong Country. The musical score was a brilliant and upbeat affair that gave the game a fantastic tropical feeling. If you did not feel as if you were on an island while you played, you clearly did not have your speakers turned up enough. The sound effects also played important roles in helping gamers feel every barrel blast, head stomp, and rhino hit. The entire setup just breathed atmospheric life into the rest of the game.
Now that you have a starting point, what is your pick? What game made you turn up the stereo or TV so loud that your ears bled, and you loved every minute of it?
