Release of the Week: Homefront (360, PS3, PC)

Homefront is a game that THQ would really like you to know about. Whether they are staging demonstrations outside of E3 or releasing thousands of balloons into San Fransisco Bay, the THQ PR department has been doing their best to let you know what Kaos Studios has been up to. In an attempt for the publisher to break away from their usual barrage of licensed games, Homefront is THQ’s bid for a piece of the AAA shooter pie.

Penned by John Milius, the author behind Red DawnHomefront’s story and his prior work share a similar theme. The game is set in the not too distant future, shortly after a unified Korea decides to invade and occupy America, taking advantage of the United States’ economic collapse. Players take the role of American freedom fighters working towards a second American revolution. The occupation is extremely violent and you will witness such atrocities as the public executions of civilians and mass graves. It is safe to say that Homefront is not for the squeamish.

Kaos’ first game was Frontlines: Fuel of War and Homefront’s multiplayer will feature similar vehicle-based combat. Players earn currency by getting kills or completing objectives, which they can use to buy better equipment or vehicles. Players will gain levels and work their way up to a maximum of level 75. If you have an online pass, that is… Online passes only come with new copies of the game and without it you will be capped at level 5. Needless to say, you will have a distinct disadvantage if you get the game second hand.

As you can imagine, there is some controversy following Homefront. The game has been heavily censored in Japan and banned outright in Korea. Hopefully Kaos Studios hasn’t been too influenced by titles like Modern Warfare, which created controversy for the sake of being controversial. THQ is making a lot of noise about Homefront, so it may just be a game worth notice.
