It is time to target a specific group of gamers: the role players. Specifically, those whohave played JRPGs. There was once a time when the only way you could enjoy an in-depth story, crazy blue eyed characters with purple hair, and a game that would not be bested unless you sunk 40+ hours meant playing some form of JRPG. Hell, some of my fondest NES and SNES gaming memories revolve around going to school and talking about what the best party strategy was for beating a boss in the latest JRPG.
Sadly, there now seems to be a big dividing line between JRPGs and a western RPGs. Instead of playing a band of prepubescent teens saving the world (as is the traditional setup for JRPGs), we now take the role of adults facing preprogrammed moral choice options while trying to save the world. It appears to many gamers that western RPGs have grown up and adjusted with the ever changing industry. Meanwhile, JRPGs continue to push the same types of stories, mechanics, and characters we have been gaming with for two decades. To some, this issue has forced them away from JRPGs and onto the new crops of western games.
With these two vastly different ways of delivering a hearty story, do you still enjoy the uniqueness that is a JRPG? Have you long moved away from this genre? Is the whole RPG genre dead? What say you community. Hit us up in the comments, Facebook, or Twitter.
