Release of the Week: Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds (PS3, 360)

It’s been over 10 years since the last numbered iteration of the Marvel vs. Capcom series. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 had a long and successful tenure in arcades. While we are far removed from the heyday of the fighting genre, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will attempt to ride on the recent success of Street Fighter 4 and enjoy a resurgence in popularity.

Unlike its predecessor, Marvel vs Capcom 3 will utilize a three button control scheme. These three buttons will signify light, medium and heavy attacks and replace the more complicated 4 button control scheme of past games. This should simplify things and make the game more appealing to casual fighting fans.

The roster contains 36 characters, each with their own ending. The characters are split evenly between Marvel and Capcom, but it does have some notable omissions. On the Marvel side, the Fantastic Four (or is it three now?) are missing. Capcom excludes fan favorite Mega Man in favor of Zero. While there is always hope for DLC characters in the future, it just isn’t the same without them in the core game.

For gamers who are new to the fighting scene, a Simple Mode will make it easier to preform combos and specials. Once your ready you can try the Mission Mode which utilizes the normal control scheme and offers character specific challenges. This will prepare you for playing against other people. Finally the most ambitious gamers can download Shadow Mode packs. These packs will feature “ghosts” modeled after some of the games most skilled players.

If you have a passing interest in fighting games but get overwhelmed by games like Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 could be for you. There is nothing like pulling off a Hyper or Team Combo and watching your opponents fall before your awesome power. Om nom eye candy!
