Retribution is the second stand alone expansion in the Dawn of War II series set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. If you are a fan of real-time strategy games, you are probably familiar with the series. While StarCraft may be the biggest RTS brand, the Dawn of War games have happily filled the void in the years between Blizzard releases. The focus on action and battlefield strategy makes the Dawn of War II games appealing to those who aren’t as into micromanaging bases.
For the first time in the Dawn of War II series, Retribution will feature a full six playable races in the single player campaign. These will include Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, Tyranids, and the Imperial Guard. The story will take place 10 years after the events of Chaos Rising and will feature all new characters. The newly added Imperial Guard will also be available to play in Multiplayer. Suffice to say, this is a pretty meaty expansion.
A significant change of note is that this will be the first Dawn of War game to completely drop Games for Windows Live and will use Steamworks exclusively to run multiplayer. This will allow for the invitation of steam friends into games as well as a faster patching process. Not to mention dropping that annoying Games for Windows Live log in. Don’t worry though, you can import any Last Stand mode’s characters from previous games into Retribution despite the change in format.
So far this year we have already seen some heavyweights this year and March is just silly for the number of AAA games hitting store shelves. While this is great for gamers, it means gems like Retribution are likely to be missed. If don’t pick it up this week, keep Retribution in mind if you get in the mood for a top notch strategy game later in the year.
