Question of the Week: What the Heck Happened to being a Gamer?

Screaming Gamer

I had a fun little Twitter conversation the other day that eventually led to this week’s question. The Twitter conversation started out with a comment about game journalists feeding off one another’s hate and essentially just looking to boost hits to their websites. This then led into a discussion on fanboys and where we are as a gaming community.

Now, everyone should have a favorite gaming platform. There is nothing wrong with that. I enjoy my PS3 over my 360 and my iPad over my DS, but will I put myself in the camp of Sony Fanboy? HELL NO! I am a gamer first and foremost. I enjoy this industry because I enjoy the entertainment it provides. I don’t care what I game on; I just want to be entertained. Hell, I enjoy tabletop gaming, board games, and card flopping for that matter.

What’s the point here? What the heck happened to just being a gamer? When did the gaming clique all of a sudden become such a divided force? First it was you were a console or PC gamer. Now you catch hate from the Sony/Microsoft camp if you enjoy your Nintendo. Why can’t we as a group just grasp that different devices bring enjoyment to different folks, honor that, and just move the hell on?

Here is your chance to flame away.

What happened to just being a gamer? If you fall in the fanboy camps, why do you defend your console with so much fury? Leave us a comment, take this chat to Twitter, or hit us up on Facebook. Civilized chat only please!!
