It’s been clear from the outset that Bulletstorm is keen to distance itself from the perception that the shooter genre is stagnant. Its bombastic combination of over-the-top, arcadey, combo-based shooting action and people who shout the word “dick-tits” at each other is just the kick up the butt the genre needs.
Okay, so it’s crass, it’s immature, it’s testosterone-heavy. But most importantly, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It doesn’t have pretensions of telling a thought-provoking story while actually turning out to be a Michael Bay movie. It’s about shooting things repeatedly in the face and testicles and enjoying the experience—something that will undoubtedly ensure it ends up on the next documentary about how awful violent games are.
The ad campaign for Bulletstorm has reflected the irreverent tone of the game, with potshots having already been taking at Halo 3‘s commercial. Now, though, playful parodying has been taken to a whole new level. A complete, free, downloadable PC game that ably and shamelessly apes all the things that Call of Duty haters loathe about that series.
It’s an interesting approach to advertising for sure, and one that’s certain to get people talking about the game if they weren’t already. And the merciless parody of Call of Duty shows that Bulletstorm is clearly aimed at gamers who appreciate what the following image means:
Duty Calls: The Calm Before the Storm is available for free download directly from its official website. Its system requirements are surprisingly modest, requiring a 2.0GHz single-core processor, NVIDIA 6200+ or ATI Radeon 9600+ graphics card… and 8GB of hard drive space.
8GB? That’s bigger than many full downloadable games! Let’s hope the effort that has obviously been spent on this parody hasn’t caused any aspects of Bulletstorm to suffer.
