A Square Enix press event held today in Japan has opened up a floodgate of new information concerning the high profile publisher/developer’s upcoming lineup of titles. Although a recent trend has seen SE put a focus on their newest (and largest) subsidiary THQ, this press event was pretty much all internally developed titles – meaning lots of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
Since there was so much news coming out of the conference, I’ll keep the descriptions short and sweet, so here it goes -
- Kingdom Hearts 3D got a subtitle… Ready? The full title will be Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. The game will switch perspective between Sora and Riku, and according to director Yasushi Yasue the development team is putting a focus on action and speed in an effort to change up the strategy and pace from other titles in the series.
- Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy (Sequel to the PSP Final Fantasy fighting title) has a paid demo out now (titled Dissidia Duodecim Prologus Final Fantasy) for 300 yen, and buyers of the demo will get FFVII favorite Aerith as an assist character when the gull game comes out later this year in Japan.
- FFXIII-2 is coming, and soon (The above logo for the game was taken from 4 Gamers twitter account). The sequel will launch simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PS3 sometime in 2011. (Lightning is the main character as well)
- Agito XIII is now known as Final Fantasy Type-0 and will also ship sometime this coming summer (no platform specified)
- Final Fantasy Versus XIII confirmed to still be real and exclusive to the PS3 (At least at this point)
Well, that about sums it up… 2 console Final Fantasy titles are coming in 2011, and a third is probable for 2012. Seems like SE has to recoup the dollars spent on the Crystal Tools engine somehow. Look for more information about the US releases of these titles as it comes. While it lasts, here is a YouTube source for videos from the conference.
