Release of the Week: DC Universe Online (PS3, PC)

It seems like there are three main genres when in comes to MMOs: fantasy, science fiction and superhero. From City of Heroes to Champions Online, there hasn’t been a shortage of masked heroes fighting for justice against hordes of evil henchmen. That being said, there hasn’t been a Superhero MMO with a major comic book license until this week.

DC Universe will allow you to become the next superhero or villain to do battle in Gotham City and Metropolis. Iconic characters such as Superman and the Joker will mentor you as you rise through the ranks. When creating your super self you will get to choose from a variety of powers, weapons and movement modes. With these and some flashy spandex, you will be on your way!

Launching an MMO in this market is an ambitious endeavor. The news that Champions Online will be going free to play soon doesn’t help things. Even so, DC Universe Online does have some good things going for it. Having the DC licenses certainly helps. Another is that this is one of the few MMOs to appear on the PlayStation 3. This could draw in some gamers who wouldn’t normally be interested in an MMO.

It’s easy to be skeptical of any MMO at launch, but what could go wrong with a game with Batman in it?

Of course, I liked APB
