What happens when the most purchased game of last year releases its first new map pack of the year? A pretty slow week in terms of releases. This week the PC will see a tactical shooter called Shadow Harvest: Phantom Ops and a post-apocalyptic MMO entitled Earthrise. Other than that, it’s, well, a pretty slow week.
Like past Call of Duty map packs, First Strike will cost 1200 Microsoft Points ($15 in adult money) and include 5 maps. Unlike in the past, all 5 maps in First Strike will be brand new. That could be why there isn’t as big of an uproar about the price this time around. Unfortunately, the map pack is a timed exclusive to the Xbox 360.
Based on the number of complaints about the PS3 version’s online multiplayer, I expect many gamers on the PS3 are used to feeling like second class citizens. As many as 1 in 10 players on the PS3 have had connectivity issues. While Treyarch has been working hard to put out patches, it’s probably too soon to expect gamers to put another $15 into the game.
Of course, this is Call of Duty we’re talking about. People buy this stuff like crack. Expect Activision to make enough money to, I don’t know, throw a private party in downtown LA and invite loads of press and celebrities right before E3. Press like our own Blake Grundman. But not me. No, I had to stay in the hotel room and play Torchlight.
Maybe I should buy the map pack this year…
