According to Nikkei (newspaper in Japan), Sony’s PSP2 will don a sharp, OLED touchscreen and include 3G cellular data from NTT DoCoMo upon its release slated to be later this year. The 3G data will allow for multiplayer action beyond ad hoc AND full video and game downloads without the need of a Wi-Fi connection. There is no word as of yet for what cellular network will support the PSP2 in Europe and in the States.
The inclusion of 3G technology has nothing to do with the rumored PSP Phone, which will supposedly run on Google’s Android platform.
Furthermore, Nikkei claims that the OLED screen will be physically larger than PSP screens in the past (not that it’s that hard to beat the screen size on the PSPgo), and it will contain a completely new processor.
Rumor has it that the official unveiling of the PSP2, as well as its unique new look and its release date, will occur on January 27th, so we aren’t that far away from possibly finding out the truth about this handheld. As much as I am a PSP fan, I have to say that so far, I am not excited about any of the news regarding the PSP2. I’ll be happy if it has dual analog sticks and a larger (hopefully not as hackable) library, but if it really does have the touchscreen on the back, all intrigue will immediately drop out the window. I suppose I’ll have to wait three-and-a-half more days to find out anything definite. But given Sony track record with leaks, we may find out even sooner…
