Is this the Official PSP2?

The "Official" PSP2The above image is supposedly the bona fide PSP2 straight from Sony’s mouth to our ears, but is it really? We all know that Sony is terrible at keeping secrets, so it’s very possible that they “leaked” this image, but it’s also very possible that this is yet another Photoshopped image.

The image suggests that Sony is keeping their PSPgo style and adding another analog stick. In addition, it seems that they’re adding a DS-like stylus and a 32 GB SD memory card on top of the typical Memory Stick Sony is so fond of.

Since it seems to have everything the Nikkei article mentioned yesterday, why question its validity?

As Kotaku points out, the image looks like it’s a scan of a handout. While it is true that Sony could be passing out these flyers at their press meeting on January 27th and one escaped them, masking an image as a handout is really simple method of hiding Photoshop touches and resolutions. Sony’s released art is usually at a high resolution, and this image is not. Also, the buttons and D-pad are at lower resolutions than the rest of the image, and the usual Sony copyright has been cut off from the bottom. At the same time, these inconsistencies could be easily explained by the process of taking the photo straight from an official handout and not online art.

And if these points weren’t enough to make you scratch your head, then how about the fact that this image looks nothing like the supposedly leaked photos of the PSP2 from last fall? You know, the photos that look like they were taken with a DSi camera.

First Photo of PSP2If that really was the PSP2, then this new image cannot be, as the analog sticks are in different spots. Besides, what about the information from Nikkei about the larger screen? I love the PSPgo, but I don’t consider its screen to be larger than much, not even my iPhone.

Once again, we’ll have to wait and see how true any of these rumors are when Sony unveils their new handheld. I really hope it is on January 27th, because I’m frankly tired of the “leaked” rumors.
