Now that 2011 is in full swing and we’re back at work it’s time to break down the hottest stories that hit the news while we were all busy playing games and watching NFL playoffs. We’ve got some predictions from EA, the first details on Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and a whole mess of 3DS news coming out of Nintendo’s big press event on Saturday.
EA Thinks This Is the Year Digital Distribution Overtakes Retail Sales – This is basically every game publisher’s wet dream, as it marks the point when they can begin cutting out GameStop and killing off used sales. We say we’ll believe it when we see it, and physical games really aren’t going anywhere.
Here Are the First Details on Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – From the sounds of things this is going to be a pretty big departure from what we grew accustomed to in Morrowind and Oblivion. Also sounds somewhat Dragon Age-y, which is no surprise considering how BioWare has sort of stolen the fantasy RPG thunder right now.
3DS Lands In Japan Next Month with 10 Games – Sadly we still don’t know anything about an American launch or what games will be showing up, but we’re still expecting the handheld to drop in March and we’ll probably see a similar list of launch games. Of course what we really care about is Ocarina of Time 3DS, amirite?
3DS Battery Lasts 3-8 Hours – The sad thing about this news is that you might literally spend more time charging your 3DS than you do playing it, as the device takes 3.5 hours to charge but may offer as few as 3 hours of playtime depending on various settings. This is a “portable” system so long as you have ready access to a wall outlet and lots of free time to juice up your batteries.
