Sony’s Mysterious TV-and-PlayStation Combo

In a somewhat peculiar move that some might call a desperate bid to hold on to their former market supremacy, Sony have launched an HD Bravia TV featuring the guts of a PlayStation console.

Awesome, you might think, especially if you haven’t yet joined the HD brigade and were thinking about planting your flag firmly in the PS3 camp. Why not buy an all-in-one package? Saves buying the console separately, surely.

Well, right. Except the PlayStation console that Sony have forcefully inserted into the catchily-titled KDL22PX300 is not a PS3. No, it’s a PS2. The 22-inch TV comes with one DualShock 2 controller and supports 720p resolution. It also features Sony’s Bravia Internet Video Access, allowing streaming of movies, TV shows and other video content directly to the TV without needing a computer, set-top box or console to act as a go-between.

In so far as connectors go, there are four HDMI sockets, SCART connectors (crazy, annoyingly-difficult-to-insert European variant on composite) and component inputs, PC/VGA input, twin optical digital outputs, headphone and audio outputs, three USB sockets and two Ethernet connections. That’s more holes to plug wires into than a lot of computers, and should certainly allow you to connect each and every gizmo you have up to the screen for 720p high-definition goodness.

It’s not a bad price either, retailing for around the £200 mark in the UK from retailers such as Richer Sounds. Interestingly, there doesn’t appear to be any mention of the product on Sony’s website, and large online retailers such as Amazon don’t seem to stock the unit, either.

Mysterious. Still, if you’re late to the Sony and/or HD parties, you certainly can’t go wrong with £200 for a decent-quality full-featured TV. A decent-quality full-featured TV that also happens to give you access to one of the most prolific back catalogs of games there is.
