Normally an expansion pack to an MMO isn’t that big of a deal. They generally just increase the level cap and add more end game content to keep those who are already invested interested in the game. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is this and more. Blizzard isn’t interested in simply keeping its 12 million subscribers. With Cataclysm they are hoping to bring in new players as well as recapture gamers fallen away from Azeroth.
Instead of just adding more end game content, Blizzard has redone the entire 1-60 experience of its six-year-old game. Those zones had gotten very aged and lacked the polish of the past two expansions. Players who were starting at level 1 had to go through 60 levels of outdated and stale gameplay before they hit the more rich end game content. The Cataclysm experience is a much more interesting and engaging one compared to the World of Warcraft of six years ago.
In addition to changing the core world, Cataclysm adds 5 more levels of new end game content, raising the level cap to 85. With the Lich King dead, players must now battle the legendary Deathwing, a very pissed off dragon who has been locked away in the core of the earth since Warcraft 2. Two new playable races are also being added. Goblins, a long time neutral faction, will join the ranks of the horde. The Werewolf-like worgan will join the Alliance after being attacked by the expanding Forsaken. The final major addition will be archeology as a secondary profession.
Not only is the expansion great for current players, but World of Warcraft has never been more approachable for new players. The best part is that the new zones are available for everyone with World of Warcraft, even if you don’t have all three expansions.
