Release of the Week: Kinect (360)

I would love to say that this week’s biggest release is the long awaited Gran Turismo 5. Sadly, the title was hit with a last minute delay. The other major games that hit stores this week include a God of War PSP game and two different James Bond games. Unfortunately, try as I might, I just can’t ignore the elephant in the room.

This week will mark the launch of Microsoft’s Kinect. If you aren’t sick of hearing about Kinect, you soon will be. Microsoft has thrown more money into the advertising campaign for the Kinect then it did for the 360 during its launch. This is largely because they aren’t trying to sell this to people like you who read video game websites. Microsoft wants to sell this to the soccer moms of the world.

Even if it’s not aimed at you directly, there is reason to pay attention to the Kinect. While at first the high-tech camera is being utilized for dancing, fitness and mini-game collections, it has the potential to bring more to the table. For now we can only speculate on what that might be. Gaming without a controller is like watching TV without cable, but of course the Internet is changing that.

At the moment, I think that the PlayStation Move is more likely to catch on with gamers. The Kinect seems too much like a glorified EyeToy of the PS2 era to appeal to someone like me. However, with the explosion of the Wii and Facebook as gaming platforms, I’ve learned that anything is possible. The Kinect has the potential to redefine gaming. Or it could be a colossal flop. Only time will tell.
