Release of the Week: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (360, PS3)

It’s time to hop back inside the Animus to experience the latest iteration of Ubisoft’s biggest video game franchise. Instead of jumping through time to a new assassin, Brotherhood will continue the story of Ezio Auditore as he organizes the assassins against the Templars in Rome. The story will also flesh out Desmond’s character as he begins to use the skills he has learned from his ancestors in the Animus.

While the setting and main protagonists are returning from Assassin’s Creed 2, Brotherhood has plenty of new features. Part of organizing the brotherhood of assassins will involve recruiting new members and sending them on errands so that they are experienced enough for when you really need them. The combat system, a clear weak point of the series, is getting a new makeover to help make combat more engaging then simply blocking and counter attacking. Leonardo da Vinci will also return, so you can expect plenty of fun toys to use throughout the struggle.

Easily the biggest change that Brotherhood is bringing to the series is multiplayer. Assassin’s Creed has always had a strong single-player focus, and adding a multiplayer component hasn’t made sense to this point. Unlike other single player centric games that have tacked on multiplayer (I’m looking at you, BioShock 2), Brotherhood offers a compelling reason for its addition. Present day Templars are training by using Animi to dive into the memories of Assassins and gain their abilities via the bleeding effect. It also helps that multiplayer modes won’t include your standard deathmatch or team deathmatch modes. Instead, most of them will involve you attempting to assassinate one player while avoiding a third player. It’s nice to have a multiplayer mode that doesn’t ignore the story and is compelling enough to actually play.

There is a big reason why Assassin’s Creed has become Ubisoft’s best selling franchise. While the setting will be staying the same this time around, the additional polish and new multiplayer modes are reason enough for fans to pick up Brotherhood. Time to get out there and conquer Rome.
