Prince of Persia is Back in HD and 3D

Prince of Persia is one of gaming’s longest-running series. During the last console generation, the series was successfully reimagined with 3D gameplay and a number of excellent new twists on the platforming formula. Now, those three games are set to make a triumphant return to PSN.

Why take the floor when the wall's right there?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is available today for $14.99 via the PlayStation Store. It includes 720p graphics and 3D effects for those lucky and/or rich enough to own a 3DTV. And it’s pretty universally agreed to be a great game, too—to date, the game’s Metacritic score stands at 92.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones will be available in December for $14.99 each. That stacks up to about $45 if you want the complete trilogy, which isn’t bad for three excellent games. Warrior Within and The Two Thrones averaged slightly lower on Metacritic, with scores of 83 and 85 respectively. They’re still worth a playthrough though, particularly for those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of playing them at all.

The trend for HD remakes continues, it seems. With the recent release of the Sly Cooper Trilogy, the return of the Prince of Persia and rumors abounding of HD collections of the Splinter Cell series, it’s a good time to rediscover some of last generation’s classics. This is good for those gamers whose first consoles were HD, as for some it is difficult to go back to the murky, low-resolution graphics of the PS2. It’s also good for those gamers who want to revisit these classics and have them looking their best on their shiny new HDTVs.

(Of course, if you wanted to play many of these games in high resolution, you could have always played the PC versions. But we’ll leave that fact to one side for now.)

We still have the Shadow of the Colossus and ICO collection to look forward to on the HD remake front. What other classic series out there would benefit from the next-gen makeover?
