Metal Gear Rising Release Pushed To 2012

Previously announced for the 2011 retail window, the upcoming Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 action title from Konami is being pushed past it’s initial target in favor of a 2012 release date. The delay seems par for the course with a Kojima Production game (Just look at the number of times that Metal Gear Solid 4 was delayed), especially with news and coverage being so sparse for the game.

So far we know that Rising will feature Raiden as a playable character, and for at least part of the game will take place parallel to Snake’s adventure played out during MGS4.  Based on the trailers that have been released thus far, Rising is shedding the Metal Gear Series staple of stealth in favor of the third person sword based combat that seems to be pretty much everywhere these days. Much like his involvement in the recent Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, series creator and director Hideo Kojima will be taking a more advisory role on the product by acting as the game’s executive producer. With Kojima vacating his usual seat, Shigenobu Matsuyama will make his directorial debut after serving as an art director on every single MGS title from the beginning (Sans the Portable PSP titles).

Although the cause of the delay is not known at this time, a few thoughts come to mind as to the possibilities.

1. The Recently announced 3D compatibility and the problems associated with maintaing a solid frame rate has lead to a greater amount of time needed for optimazation of the game’s engine.

2. Looking at the most recent trailer and the emphasis that the game is putting on precise sword control, the use of the Playstation Move is likely at this point with Sony probably pushing it’s big third party developers for core gamer titles that utilize the new motion controlled based system.

3. Hey, It’s a Kojima Production!

Anyone want to take bets on what’ll come first between Rising, The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy Versus XIII?
